I don’t have any immediate shows coming up so I’ve been indulging myself with making things that just feel darn good. I’ve continued on with my color studies and passion for documenting it and with my Sharpie doodles as well.

I ran into some problems with the paper and am happy to say that I found a solution. The previous paper was glossy and coated…after some use with the Sharpie it would get clogged up. Think of writing with a felt tip pen through chalk. I found that one marker wasn’t able to finish an 8-1/2″ x 11″ page. I bought another brand of glossy paper and it worked just fine. The markers just gliiiiide over the surface and last much longer now. The decreased drag across the surface also makes it easier on my hands.

This design above is the precursor to the more tentacle-like versions. Pulling it back out for this post makes me see the richness of it. Very petite dots in this one! And look at the bolder dots that make up the inner frame. I like! And you know what that means…more exploration on this theme!
I took a little jump and tried something different too.

A more geometric version with more uniformity to the dot sizes. Looking at it this small makes you a little dizzy but at the regular size it is pretty striking. Yes, more ideas on these brewing on this theme too.
I haven’t decided what I want to do with these but I’m considering buying what it takes to mat them. But then I wonder if this will fizzle and I’ll be left with equipment I don’t use and takes up studio space. I also want to start to incorporate words and journalling since these are a form of journalling for me.
Anyone out there have any thoughts/knowledge about matting your own work and what kind of investment that is?

There are so many frames out there pre-matted. That way I don’t feel like I have lost out on anything if I decide I don’t like it or want to change it. You can even dress up plain white mats by gluing fabric or pretty paper to it. Beautiful study of form and shape and pattern. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy the day! Erin

Thanks Erin! What a great idea. I’m thinking I need to make a trip to the craft store…I always pass right by that framing section. Time to start paying attention the their coupons!
Any tips on other good places to find pre-matted frames?
