Twisties, Colors and Stuff

January 26, 2010 - by Artemis Lampwork

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I apologize for that. Between more problems with my right arm, and additional hospitalizations for my hubby, things haven’t been easy. Glass play has held a back seat to issues of a more immediate nature.

I have been DYING to make some colorful twisties and beads for Valentines Day, but it isn’t happening fast enough for me! Here are some of my past goodies for bead making.

Here are some of the delightful color combos I prefer for Valentine, and for St Patricks Day:

St Patricks Day Twisties

All of this lovely color makes me drool in anticipation of creating lovely beads. Here are some beads I made using 2 and 3 color twisties to create my signature “Zebra” beads.

Try to imagine what your favorite Holiday color combo would look like, magnified under a crisp, glossy coat of  Lauscha Clear!

I probably won’t be able to make any Valentines beads this year, but I am holding out hope for St Paddy’s day goodies! I will be experimenting with some new color combos and patterns for this years first beads (I haven’t made ANY beads in 2010 yet!).

Ok, so have I inspired you to try some new color combo treats for Valentine or St Patty’s Day? Go for it!

Hugs

Halloween has Inspired Me!

October 8, 2009 - by Artemis Lampwork
Every year I have started chomping at the bit early (June & July!), to make Holiday beads, and by August I am in full Holiday creative mode. This year, between the move (STILL unpacking) and arm pain, I got behind and forgot to notice I was late for Halloween. Oh, HOW could I miss THE BEST creative holidays I make beads for? (Darn I am ALWAYS ending sentences with prepositions, someone shoot me! LOL)

One of the reasons I enjoy the winter holidays so, is that I get to see more of what other artists (Jewelry Designers, etc), come up with incorporating my beads and twisty combos, than any other time of the year.

Here are some of my past holiday beads & twisties, designed into lovely wearable art by fellow Jewelry Artists, from the past couple winter holiday seasons.

Judy Krushaurs Slumped Pendants (my Christmas twisties).

The vivid color combos I use to create Custom Twisties, and Straight Pull Cane are amazing when used by such talented artists as Judy Krushaur of  Desert Rose Glass!

Fall Earrings by Bead Designs by Ellen, incorporating my beads

My sister Ellen (Bead Designs By Ellen) is one of my favorite jewelry artists. I send her lots of my beads and other creations. Even if the beads don’t inspire me to create jewelry pieces, she works magic and makes them all look amazing! The fall earrings above look magnificent, thanks to simply adding the correct crystals, and lovely wire wrap! She took this large experimental piece I made below, and simply added spacers to create this lovely wine stopper~!

Joolz By Lisa Bracelet, my beads

One more bracelet, made by my totally talented friend Lisa (Joolz By Lisa). I really did not like these beads when they emerged from the kiln, so I posted them up on a forum on LampworkEtc to get some opinions as to what other designers/lampworkers thought of them. I was overwhelmed with the positive reaction, so I posted them for sale and Lisa grabbed them up. She really made a silk purse from a sows ear if you ask me!
Please let me know how the Holidays inspire you!

The Joy of Rediscovery: or, Glass-a-licious fun!

September 3, 2009 - by Artemis Lampwork

I never thought I would say this, but unpacking is actually starting to become fun. Now that all the clothes and dishes are MOSTLY put away, I am having a great time rediscovering some of my long packed away lampwork supplies and glass. The best surprise this week, was some German vintage glass I’d purchased a while back from Jessica at Phoenix Art Supplies, and tucked away for some later play time!  LATER has arrived, yahoo!

My favorites of the Vintage German glass colors/styles are shown below.  They make great 96 COE twisties, and I have used them  successfully in slumping , and making beads, with anywhere from 90 COE to 104 COE glass!

This is one of my favorites, Jessica calls this “Hexagonal Glass”,  but it really is Pentagonal (5 sided) in profile. It is clear 96 COE rod, with a black stripe down each of the five corners, which produces this lovely effect when twisted and applied to a bead (the first three pictures below are courtesy of  Phoenix Art Supplies):

Black Lattcino German Vintage Rod (on a red and pink bead)

Another of my faves from her, includes another Hexagonal (again, it’s Pentagonal in profile) glass, this one is green with a hole through the center of  the rod. I found the hole wide enough to allow me to insert a thin piece of  black 96 COE stringer and using it that way, pull some AWESOME twisties.

She also sells “Dirty Shorts”, so I bought a pound way back when,  and cleaned them up (they really weren’t very dirty).

I made some awesome Holiday Twisties (below) with them about 2 years ago (before I shattered my elbow). The nice thing about  glass is, it NEVER grows STALE! Jessica tells me that most of this glass was made in the mid 1950′s, yet it handles just like new! LOL

I  made these beautiful twisties using 96 COE rods too! The Baby Blue and Green Twist is made using the Green Hex glass with some 96 COE Sky Blue, and the Clear and Dark latticino is made with Dark colors from the Winter mix I bought.

People often ask me WHY I like making twisties, and the only reply I can come up with, is that the time I spend making these gorgeous twisties, is like meditation time. I love the infinite selections of colors and designs, and never get bored!

Before I got hurt, I could spend 4 hours on the torch and not even realize it. Time just flew, while I was happily mixing and twisting colors. Nowadays, it takes a great effort for me to grit my teeth and bear the pain of  torching, But, every moment I spend at the flame now, I consider a great accomplishment, so I keep trying, and praying I can do more some day. It distresses me that the thing I love to do best hurts me, but I don’t plan to quit trying!
