Commissions and Creativity

June 24, 2010 - by Robin Maria Pedrero

Recently I have been asked to create art similar to a previous creation.  Partridge and Pear Blossoms was requested due to a new customer and art collector’s desire to have less blue than my piece Partridge in a Pear Tree. Using pastels, my specialty, I knew recreating would not be an issue. I did not want to completely duplicate but to have a similar sense and subject matter.

I was also asked to recreate a particular sky from Many The Miles and make a beach scence which I titled after my art collector and client Barby’s Beach.

Although they are the same size and a very similar sky each piece evokes a different experience and feeling.  I am presently working on a piece where the duplicate commissioned is an acrylic. I was quite confident I could recreate the pastels however I work my acrylics less controled and mix colors so in having to recreate I contemplated the layers quite extensively.  I am presently in progress with recreating “Rejuvenate

Remaking Rejuvenate

Rejuvenate again

Here’s how I began to recreate, although I did not do this with the first one.
Lots of color and some cellophane on wet paint.
Fun!

Painting for a Solo Show

May 21, 2010 - by Robin Maria Pedrero

In my last post I shared about meeting goals. My most recent accomplishment was to make 10 – 15 large 3ft to 5ft pieces for my solo exhibit which came to fruition this May 2010. The first supplies to purchase when going from smaller pieces to larger pieces are without question a larger ground and for me in this instance my ground is canvas, and with that larger brushes! While traveling in Savannah I came across these huge fun Sumi brushes.

Big oriental brushes

The large blank white canvas can be intimidating, and  LOADS of FUN!

White Canvas Big Brush

I begin without drawing I begin with color!

Sometimes the canvas is so large I have to move from several tables to the floor to have distance...see my toes

Applying color to canvas

This is where I remove the fear of a blank canvas and go for it!

Color! The first layer.

And I continue to layer while working simultaneously on numerous pieces because I am not one to just sit and wait for one piece to dry I have several pieces working at the same time..which when working larger requires much more space… like my screened in porch!

Working on Numerous Pieces

Second round of layers

I imagine my adventure in each piece throughout the course of weeks,

painting is a visual journey, with this one…

first I am in an African plain…then I am back visiting Niagara Falls and Maui.

eventually this….evolves….layer after layer…. until

the story weaves into a cup filled with Gratitude.

Gratitude

Can you see deep into the back layers?…some are very evident while other parts more subdued.

The original is presently hanging in my solo exhibit at The Steinway Gallery in Altamonte Springs Florida

until the end of May.

I have prints available in my Etsy Shop.

Somewhere between a landscape and an abstract.

April 27, 2010 - by Robin Maria Pedrero

The place I occupy now is somewhere between a landscape and an abstract.

I am looking back as I move forward.

Sharing my past which is very much a relevant part of creating my future work.

1990′s – 2000 Portrait artist and developing landscapes(soft pastel and oil)

2001 – 2006 Portrait artist and landscape skyscape artist
nicknamed the “skylady” at Cafe Tu Tu Tangos (soft pastel)

2007 – 2008 Contemporary Landscapes with a more ambiguous use of color
for emotive works of art and continued portraiture.

With collaborations, influences and necessity began my journey in acrylic paint,
depicting larger than life subjects.

In my 2009 goals I asked So what do I want? I want to be in National Museums – Met, Chicago Art Institute, Boston Museum of Fine Art etc. I want to be internationally known, respected for my work and collected. I want to profit from art (originals and products). I will produce a significant body of work which I aim to be pleasing and glorifying to God.

It’s 2010, I continue to paint in acrylic and draw with pastels. I exhibit nationally and ship art around the world. I take on commissions for portraits, landscapes and my more intuitive symbolic work. I have expanded from numerous works on 8×8″ canvases to 6ft pieces for my upcoming solo exhibit Continuum at the Steinway Gallery in Altamonte Springs Florida opening May 13. As I have been creating this new body of work I question myself who is this artist and where did she come from.  I share my thought process here with you, as thoughts greatly effect what, how and why I create. Goals are part of my creative process. I am glad to respond to your thoughts and questions in the comments.
